lives on a farm on the south side of Buchan – that cold shoulder of Scotland
that sticks out into the North Sea. His family have farmed there since the
1830s. He has written songs and stories in the idiom of the North East Lowlands
as well as being at one time the champion cabar tosser of all Scotland.
folk lore, sense of humour and voluminous balladry of the North-east lacked
outlets which recognised the important features of the area in what Charlie
regarded as a satisfactory way, Instead of complaining he set up Ardo Publishing
Co and started writing, singing and publishing some of what was being
overlooked. In 1999 the University of Aberdeen recognised his contribution to
the area with an honorary degree.
well as farming Charlie held down a fulltime job at the BBC talking daily about
farming, he lectured in the Universities of St. Andrews, Glasgow and Strathclyde,
and travelled the world as a professional athlete.
