Who is Charlie Allan?

He lives on a farm on the south side of Buchan that cold shoulder of Scotland that sticks out into the North Sea. His family have farmed there since the 1830s. He has written songs and stories in the idiom of the North East Lowlands as well as being at one time the champion cabar tosser of all Scotland.

The folk lore, sense of humour and voluminous balladry of the North-east lacked outlets which recognised the important features of the area in what Charlie regarded as a satisfactory way, Instead of complaining he set up Ardo Publishing Co and started writing, singing and publishing some of what was being overlooked. In 1999 the University of Aberdeen recognised his contribution to the area with an honorary degree.

As well as farming Charlie held down a fulltime job at the BBC talking daily about farming, he lectured in the Universities of St. Andrews, Glasgow and Strathclyde, and travelled the world as a professional athlete.

Note real sharn on wellingtons.

Sorry about the ridiculously young photograph. For something more realistic see page for Farmer's Diary Vol V.
